Wednesday Albatros H4 booked its first win this season, against Volamos H3. Although several players suffered from the after effects of flue, food poisoning and other mishap, for most of the time they played well and concentrated. In the first set the gap was big, 25-14, after which – as often happens – the second set went considerably less, even leading to a small loss. Yet, the team regained it’s posture and solidly finished the next two sets with good margins. Dennis, also still somewhat ill, even ended the third set with two aces.
Besides, the Dutch women won and in our hall former Albatros players Alexis and Jesse had a significant part in the VVA H1 victory in their 2nd division game. Alexis excelled in the final set and scored the winning point.
While the Dutch national women’s team fought Azerbeidjan in the European Championship’s semi finals, the H4 guys were struggling in the Blauwwithal against a very strong VVA side. A lot of long rally’s, often strongly contended, but VVA unfortunately won most of them – hence the regular 4-0 defeat. Still, the game was close and the spirit was really good. I think we played against the two strongest sides in our poule, so results should be getting better from now.
Wednesday night Albatros H4 played their first competition game in their new line-out. As Nikos moved on to H1, Sam became setter, Damian returned as mid to replace Bogdan and youth player Jesse joined the team as outside power hitter. Even though this was the very first time they played together in this new set-up and the opponent Zipangu is a very strong team, they did very well and lost only with a very small margin. More importantly, they managed to have a real good teambuilding excercise which promises a lot for the rest of the season.
H4 wins 5-setter again, with good debute of youth player Jesse in 4th class. For the second time in four days Albatros H4 played a very tight, maximum lengte game and won again with 3-2. Against the No. 1 team of UvO H2, even the points difference was nihil: 104-104. Eleven (!) players made this succes possible, including guest setter Edgar and youth player Jesse, who both did very well. And Nikos proved to be not only an excellent setter, but also a hard hitter – as the video shows.
On Thursday night Albatros H4 had to play an away game against VCW in Landsmeer – “altijd lastig”, for those team members who are trying to learn important Dutch catch phrases. Some weeks ago they lost 3-1 against VCW, but now the cards were turned. After solid wins in the first two sets, the start of the third set went wrong and the team lost its composure. Only after a timely time-out in the beginning of the fourth set the Albatros guys regained their earlier level of play and finished at 25-17 nicely with a fine smash by Bogdan – as the film shows.
Wednesday night Albatros Heren 4 had to gain at least four points to become champion in their fifth class poule. After a close 25-23 win over Arena H2 in the first set and a walk-over in the second set, everybody expected the third set to be won easily, but that turned out to be very different. Smash verder!
Tuesday night Albatros H4 played a vital game in the Van Hogendorphal against Syzygy H1, the last remaining contender for the nummer one position in our fifth class poule. Syzygy played very well in their last few games and proved to be a real difficult opponent this night as well. Smash verder!
The game against Arena H1 on Wednesday night proved to be the most daring one for Albatros H4 up till now. Not only because Arena played really well, but the our guys made a lot of mistakes. And forgot to communicatie and support each other. Especially in the third and fourth set which were lost. The good thing throughout, was that the team managed to get their act together again in the last set, resulting in a 3-2 win. Still on track for the championship.
After defeating De Spuyt H5 with 3-1 in their game on Tuesday night, H4 is now actually leading the table in its 5th class poule, 3 points and a game ahead of runner-up CTO. So the team is right on track to reach the 4th class by the end of the year, but a lot of work and training will still have to be done to reach the necessary level of playing too. The team-performance in the training game against 4th class H3 clearly showed the need for that. So let’s work!
Our expats men team played their third game against the nummer one in their 5th class poule: CTO, on CTO’s home ground in Duivendrecht. It was a tense game with only 5 points or less difference in every set, but the Albatros team managed to win all four sets. With five more points H4 is right on track for the championship, even more so if they win against runner-up De Spuyt on Tuesday.
